Only a decade ago, the ratio of the institutionalized children was extremely high in Moldova. Between 2002 and 2012, the country reduced by over 50% the number of children placed into residential care. As a result of the reform, we have currently 18 closed institutions, while over 9700 were placed into family environment \u2013the majority of whom \u2013 into the extended family.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Grigora\u015f made a general presentation on the achievement of the USAID\/DCOF supported projects helping the Government of the Republic of Moldova in the reform of the national child care system, and then discussed in details the specific approaches and methods used in the process of deinstitutionalization, the child\u2019s family and community integration, and prevention of unnecessary child\u2019s separation from family.<\/p>\n<p>In her presentation, Dr. Grigora\u015f made an overview of the residential care system in Moldova, highlighting the causes and conditions that favor child\u2019s institutionalization, and talked about the situation that lead to the care system reform in the country. The main results of this reform were underlined, explaining the approach made by the USAID\/DCOF-funded project supporting the Government of the Republic of Moldova in the national child care system reform, implementation of the vast deinstitutionalization process, including the theory of change in this process.
