In her dreams, she sees her grandson standing alongside everyone else

Mrs. Liubovi is from Soroca. Although she is retired, she is the legal guardian of her 11-year-old grandson. The boy’s father passed away when he was only 10 months old, and his mother died a year ago as a result of an incurable illness—an event that marked the beginning of serious financial hardship for the household.

The grandmother never once considered placing the child in residential care. Instead, she chose to share her last slice of bread with him. They struggle to make ends meet on her monthly pension of 800 lei and the 600 lei guardianship allowance the boy receives.

The Soroca Directorate of Social Assistance and Family Protection provides the support stipulated by law, yet unfortunately it is not enough. The elderly woman says they are in need of firewood, food, clothing, footwear, and school supplies so that her grandson can have the same opportunities as other children. The boy is in the third grade and is a good student.

If each of us could extend a helping hand—offering support in any form—perhaps the food placed on their table at the beginning of the year and the warmth of the stove on a cold day could bring meaningful change to the lives of this grandmother and grandson struggling with poverty. For them, such gestures would carry the significance of a fulfilled celebration, shared with all those who have placed into their hands a small part of the long-awaited Christmas.
